Important Updates to Our Terms & Policies
At Squarespace, we’re always focused on improving our services and your user experience. To address some of the exciting changes to our services, and to make our terms and policies more transparent and understandable for you, we’ve updated our Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and additional site terms.
How are the updated terms organized?
We’ve reorganized our terms to make them easier to understand.
- We’ve streamlined our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy to make them more concise and straightforward. We’ve also added annotated summaries to our Terms of Service, to help you follow the text.
- We’ve introduced three new policies: our Acceptable Use Policy, Cookie Policy and Copyright Policy. While we’d covered these topics in our prior site terms, these new standalone policies should be more accessible.
- To maintain balance in the universe, we’ve sunsetted three prior policies: our Domains Terms, Logo Terms and Template License. They’re all now covered in our streamlined Terms of Service.
What are some of the more important changes?
While you should read all the updated terms and policies, here’s a summary of some of the more important changes:
- We’ve applied to join the new EU-US Privacy Shield program. Our Privacy Policy includes information about the rights afforded to you as part of our Privacy Shield certification.
- We’ve clarified how we treat content that you provide to Squarespace. We refer to it as your “User Content”, and make it clear that your User Content (like your photos, videos or text) remains yours. When you post your User Content, you just grant us a license to use it, and we list the ways we can do that.
- We’ve let you know that we may send you marketing and promotional communications, and you can unsubscribe if you don’t want to receive them.
- We’ve reminded you that your interactions with third party services integrated into Squarespace are between you and them.
- We’ve provided updates regarding our billing and eCommerce policies.
- The dispute resolution section in our Terms of Service explains how and where you can bring a claim against us, and includes important information about informal dispute resolution, arbitration and a class action waiver.

Do I need to do anything?
You don’t need to take any further action to accept the updated terms and policies.
If you used our services at any time before September 26, 2016, the updated terms and policies will go into effect for you on October 26, 2016. If you continue to use our services on or after October 26, 2016, you’re agreeing to the updated terms and policies. If you don’t agree to the updated terms and policies, you should stop using our services and close your account before October 26, 2016.
If you first started using our services on or after September 26, 2016, these updated terms and policies are already in effect for you.
Will the updated terms change the way I use Squarespace?
No, you should not experience any change in how you use Squarespace.
